The world of asphalt shingles has undergone huge changes in the last decade. Historically an asphalt shingle roof has had a service life of between 15 to 20 years. In the last 10 to 15 years, warranty claims (not to be confused with service life expectations) have escalated into the 50 year and even “lifetime” range. However, these warranty numbers have very little to do with how long the shingles will likely actually last on your roof. To this date in 2012 there has still not been an asphalt shingle that has lasted much over 20 years – except for those that have left them on the roof far past when they should have been replaced. There are a bewildering and ever changing number of new asphalt shingle choices now available. We would encourage you to ignore the pro-rated and marketing related warranty numbers when choosing the type of asphalt shingle you want. It is too confusing when even the entry level (15 year service life expectancy) shingles are now carrying a “lifetime” designation. We rather break them into four different qualities of asphalt shingles; entry level (3 bundle); upgraded SBS enhanced – good (4 bundle); better (5 bundle) and best (6 bundle). Most manufacturers will have choices in all of these categories.
